God raises up spokesmen, the prophets, to speak words of warning and judgment on rebellious Israel and Judah. Elijah’s ministry is attended by many miraculous manifestations of God’s power, but leaders continue to oppose him. Elisha his successor also has God’s supernatural approval, and before he dies, he helps install godly king Jehu. Later, Amos and Hosea warn of God’s anger over Israel’s sins, but their messages largely fall on deaf ears. The clock is ticking; God’s judgment is drawing near.
